Monitoring ESX 3 systems

We have 3 ESX machine in our environment that are currently monitored by Up TIme 4. We are trying to implement Orion as our monitor solution instead but Orion does not have a built in solution for those particular systems like Up Time does. I would like to know what steps I need to follow in order to capture the necessary information(like CPU and Memory utilization) through Orion. I appreciate any assistance that can be provided.

This is something we want as well.

Until now I didn't find any solution or tips concerning ESX servers.
We are considering changing to Virtualcenter for this purpose.

Unfortunately we will have 2 monitoring systems then.

PS Questions about Notes and Netware servers aren’t answered as well.
Beside people complaining that they are being ping ponged between Solarwinds and vendors.

I hope you get you’re answer (I would benefit from it as well J ).

We are considering changing to Virtualcenter for this purpose.

Having been I user of both Orion and Virtualcenter for sometime, I can say that I don't think Orion will ever be a complete replacement for Virtualcenter. Virtualcenter does much more than just monitoring resources. It is a central management platform that allows VMotion, central management of multiple ESX servers, DRS, etc.

Agreed. That doesn't make sense as a goal for Orion. But I do think we need to include some better ESX monitoring in Orion. What do you think would be most useful, Sam?

Well, here are some things that I like about the resource monitoring in VirtualCenter:

* Ability to monitor CPU/Disk/Memory/Network utilization of all VMs at once (on one graph) by looking at the Performance tab of the host

* Ability to monitor tasks/events that are executed by users.

* Ability to view the CPU utilization of the host system processes

* Getting the state of all VMs (even if it is not powered on).

Getting all of this information at once when clicking on a VMWare host would be nice. Currently I monitoring the handful of VMs that I am responsible for by monitoring them via SNMP like any other server.

Also, as a side note I have always liked the translucent graphic overlay that pops up with color keys and the values for each graph at that point in time.

I am using the Universal Device Poller to track several items on my ESX servers.

By the way, the UDP is awesome!

Anyway, here are th OIDs I have started using:

1.3.6.1.4.1.6876.2.1.1.4 (vmGuestOS)

1.3.6.1.4.1.6876.2.1.1.6 (vmState)

1.3.6.1.4.1.6876.2.1.1.8 (vmGuestState)

I am also getting the ESX CPU and Memory usage to a degree. What I would really love to see is CPU and memory usage for each VM running, and to be able to alert against those via Orion.

I am looking to do the same thing. I suppose I can add the VM to Orion using it's IP address, but I thought that Orion would pick up any new VM that was added to the cluster and monitor its CPU and MEM utilization. If anyone knows how to do this with the UDP, please share. Thanks!!

Agree with you on that Sam.

Dont know much about Orion since i use IPMonitor but as long as you know the MIBs you should be able to monitor just about anything you want on the ESX box. I also use VirtualCenter and it does do much more than just monitor usage on the box(es) so i dont really see how you could compare the two. If you dont have VirtualCenter and you have the ability and financial means to purchase it that would be a great move even though it adds an additional management tool...but well worth it.

Also if you have virtual center and you have some SQL knowledge (at least this works in IPMonitor) you can use a SQL Q&A type monitor to monitor the info in the database for VirtualCenter. The VirualCenter database keeps pretty much everything in its database. I do this with our environment although not the easiest thing to setup it is doable as long as you can do some basic SELECT statements to find the data you need.
