Trending Disk Performance

Question

What is the best way to trend out disk performance statistics. I'd like to be able to monitor stats that are in perfmon like Disk Queue, transfers per sec, etc. however, when I search the mib database I cand find them but they aren't supported.

I read one thread about these OIDs and saying I need to install a third party app called SNMP Informant, but that seems too cumbersome. Is there an easier way to do this? Am I approaching this from the wrong direction?

Trying to find the best solution for monitoring/trending our workstation hard drives and provide some indication on potential failures.

Monitoring queued I/O may be a great way of monitoring disk performance, but it's really not a method of proactively determining the potential failure of a hard disk. For something like this you'd be better off looking at DMI (Desktop Management Interface) or WMI. Both have the ability to leverage S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) to predict impending hard disk failures. Below is a Microsoft article that describes the WMI schema to see the S.M.A.R.T. values of your hard drive. With this information you should be able to leverage APM to provide pre-failure notifications.
