To upgrade or not - that is the question

All,

I have been following the many, many posts on the forum and have to ask "Should I really pursue upgrading from Orion 8.5.1 to Orion 9 SP2"?

It seems, that while I have many issues with my current version of Orion, they are known problems. From reading the forums on how the upgrades are going and the many issues with Orion 9 that it might be better off staying with what I have and waiting for the dust to settle - maybe version 10.

Is version 9 "really" worth the pain?

Thoughts and comments appreciated....

We upgraded just after SP1 was available and only had a couple of very minor upgrade issues (neither prevented the upgrade or caused us an outage).

SP2 was installed when available, and Orion seems to be very stable. While you may have a site specific issue that comes to light (as is always possible), I think Orion v9 at SP2 is a very stable release.

The custom poller has been the biggest plus for us - and was reason alone for us to upgrade.

I did that upgrade without any real issues.

Only "issue" I had was with the SP2 install. After installation, it was unable to start the Server Manager. I rebooted, and all was well.

I also allowed the initial install (9.0) to open Server Manager and run a baseline.

The new features rock. In fact, the Universal Device Poller makes it all worth while.

What makes the Universal Device Poller so great in your opinion?

I downloaded a demo of Orion 9 SP2 and it seemed lik the UDP is very similar to the Custom MIB Poller provided in 8.5.1. I didnt see a big difference between the two, unless I am missing something.

i went from 8.5 to 9.0 - it went without any problems and the differences were very noticeable – that is – very much improved.

i’m like you though – my hesitation is going to SP2…I’m waiting for the dust to settle down on that service pack. i’ve been reading a lot about issues with it and it makes me concerned.

Whoa, there. Don't get any rumors started. We just released 9.0 two months ago. There won't be a 10.0 for a while. Our next release will be 9.1. We expect it this year (although no promises). I can't yet say what's in it FWIW, our internal impression (based on Support tickets, our obsessive reading of Thwack, and other conversations with customers) is that 9.0 has been a fairly smooth upgrade and it's been a really stable release. If it were me, I'd upgrade to 9.0.

What makes the Universal device poller so good = MIB table support.

We can now utilize custom MIB's for a large number of devices, and have a very simple alert structure. Examples for us include power supply status, fan status, temp status and BGP status.
