Cisco Switch IOS - VLAN Configurations

We need some ideas on this one. On Cisco switches running IOS the vlan information is not in the config. We had to rebuild a switch and it took us a few minutes to realize the vlan information was missing. We need a better way to back up that information as well. Outside of writing a show vlan job each night and put that into a file is there any better way of tracking this information?

I think this would be a nice feature in the next release in that Cirrus knows a switch like this has that information and include that as part of its configuration backup.

so you want the results of the "sho vlan" to be included in your config backup? you should able to create a custom device type and use a text editor to modify the "sho run" command to something more appropriate.

On our 3560s running adv ip services, if I look at our config it shows the following. Do you think if you upgrade code you will be able to achieve what you want? Just my 2 cents. Their is also a vlan.dat file in flash which you may be able to tftp off and keep a backup of, but im not sure how you would index it. This file keeps all the vlan info and could be restored to a switch to add you vlans back.

This is a weird one. We have 2 switches running the same code...one shows the vlan info like you have, the other does not.

so you are saying when you perform a show run you dont see the above VLAN configs? are you using TACACS? it sounds like there may be a rights issue.

Also note there is a difference between creating/managing VLANS in configuration mode and using VLAN database (stop doing this :-)).

This is probably a matter of the VLAN configuration being contained in the legacy "vlan database" configuration mode, versus the IOS configuration.

I think it would be a great feature to be able to have Cirrus backup the VLAN.DAT file from switches as well as the configuration files. I would not think that this would be a hard feature to add since you can just TFTP the file down to Cirrus.
