Symantec BrightMail and Linux server and MIBs

Question

Anyone have this environment where you have Symantec BrightMail running on a Linux server and you are successfully using SNMP TRAPs plus monitoring it with Orion?

Symantec offers these MIBs but I’m not able to query them with Orion. Is it because of Linux or is this a case where I need to request the BrightMail MIBs be incorporated into Orion’s MIB.CFG file?

Hi,

Have you tried a MIB walk on this server (how-to)?

Is a SNMP community string configured (less /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf)?

Is the snmp daemon running (top or htop)?

If the MIB Walk is only returning information from one of the MIB, is the SNMP string used has access to these MIBs?

If it is using Net-SNMP, you can reconfigure the snmpd.conf file easily with snmpconf.

As per Symantec doc, the SNMP Service is disabled by default:

I’m new to Linux and using SNMP with its operating system. So, would we need to manipulate the Linux file ‘snmpd.conf’? Maybe edit it and include the OID into this file or something, to establish an interface with Orion?

The OIDs don't need to be added to Orion's database for you to be able to monitor them. That just makes it easier to set up your pollers.

It's more likely the SNMP daemon on the server doesn't understand the OIDs, so it isn't returning a value.
