Device Submodules

Question

Hi,

Is there any future plans to have solarwinds discover the modules within a device. For example if a cisco chassis has a number of modules that solarwinds identifies these modules and is able to respond to the status of one of these modules. We have on occassion has a blade fail that connects to user ports, because none of the user interfaces are monitored you are unaware of the failure.

I suppose this may mean that solarwinds needs to have some extra intelligence on querying devices from various manufactures.

That's something we're thinking about for the future.  Discovery is getting an overhaul, but discovering modules is not going to happen in the next release.  Maybe afterwards.

Hi,

We do attempt to do the same using syslog with various success , I know that our Cisco LMS will alert on a module failure on cisco devices and it would be nice if Orion could do the same. 1 more reason not to have to rely on LMS. I will have a look into whether there are MIBS that give the status of the installed blades, however if they are in a table format which I assume it will be difficult to alert from I think.

Miron,

We use syslog messages to alert us on switch module failures, The tricky part is that there are many different types of possible failures, and there may or may not be a syslog message with each type of failure. Hard failures are relatively easy, but then there are some soft failures that can be sneaky.

From what I understand, SW is moving in the direction of further integrating the Orion NPM and NCM functions with one another, but I'm not sure if this will result in the functionality you seek. I haven't tried it yet, but I suppose one can build a custom poller to keep an eye on them.
