multi reboot alert question

I am getting repeat reboot messages........when go to my web interface it tell me that server

XX just rebooted and that is correct. I go to the log file and verify... and that is correct. But

email alerts give it to me 2 times (not all servers and not all the time) So what i am trying

is the increment of time) I moved it from checking every 1 min. to every 3 mins......

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated......again on some but not all i will get alert emails

about 2 mins apart saying the same server rebooted when if fact it only rebooted 1 time

Are you absolutely sure that you do not have the server added in Orion twice, possibly with different IP addresses? If this were the case, Orion would be polling the same device twice and it's DNS and server name could match but have different IP addresses. A quick way to verify this would be to add 'IP_Address' to your alert message and test again. If the IP comes up different in the two messages, then you've found your problem and you can delete one of the nodes in Orion.

It almost sound like you have overlapping alerts configured. I could be wrong...

I would start by checking the AlertLog table for the alerts in question and see if the same alert fired twice. It will have all of the details about the alerts that have fired in there. If you find that you have 2 different alerts firing for the same node, you can distinguish them by the AlertDefID column. If you match the value in the AlertDefID column to the AlertDefID column in the AlertDefinitions table, you will see the name of the alert that fired in the AlertName column.

This will show you exactly what is happening when the alert fires.

hey thanks for getting back with me.....i went to the custom property editor and

did a sort on IP and names and unfortunatley there were no duplicates......

still checking.......

Scottd's suggestion was also a very good one. The advanced alerts are checked on a timed interval if the alerts are only minutes apart, it's very possible the duplication is in the alerts themselves. Also, note that there are two alert engines: Advanced and Basic. Both can alert on node reboots. You might double check that you haven't duplicated any alerts between the two engines. You can manage these two by opening the Orion Network Performance Monitor on the Orion server and then click on alerts. From there, you'll see a link for 'Basic' and ' Advanced'.

thanks...never been in this area before but i found exactly what you were talking bout. I did see the repeat alserts and were emailed successfully. so what i am seeing is the same alert (reboot) going out 2 times within 2 mins....on 2 sererate servers...all indications so far would indicate that the server rebooted 2 times but that is not the case.

thanks.....i increased the time on the "check this alert every" and i put it to 3 mins

instead of 1......will see what happens the next day or so.....
