Hello,
I am attempting to complete a trial installation of NCM, but I just cannot get it to install correctly and I am hoping someone here can help. The installation guide doesn't seem to be as fully complete as I might personally like I suppose. But before we get into that, here is my platform:
- Hardware: Virtualized (VMWare)
- 1x vCPU
- 2GB Memory
- 35GB Hard Drive
- OS: Windows Server 2008 r2 Standard
Keeping in mind that on this VM all I have done was perform a basic installation of my OS (accepting defaults all the way), followed by taking a snapshot so that I can revert to that state for troubleshooting purposes, here are some problems I have hit:
- Non-specific error during initial installation screen (resolved by installing IIS as a role)
- Error during installation saying Msiexec failed. SolarWinds suggestion was that this was a Microsoft error and means that I needed to unload and reload the service... this was very wrong. I needed to go into features and enable .NET 3.5.
The problem I have now is that installation finishes, but when I go to start it and am brought through the wizard I always hang on the "database settings" page where I am prompted for the database to connect to. I type in "local\(SQLEXPRESS)" as I am told to dozens of times, but it never works. I have tried it both with "Windows Authentiction" and "User SQL Server Authentication" (providing administrator credentials). I am told "Can not connect to the SQL Server. The original issue is: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server". I encounter the same issue when I am using the SolarWinds "SQL Database Manager" tool. Yet when I go to the C: drive, I do find SQL Server Express 2005 installed under program files. So... what's wrong? What is the step that I need to tweak to allow this to work that is not specified in the installation guide?
Thank You,
David
