Patch Manage Agent - Detailed Overview?

Can someone with patch manager experience provide some more detail in the way the agent behaves in use? For example if I schedule an inventory and a machine with an agent is offline will it just skip the machine without trying to connect, or will it grab the inventory when the machine comes back online?
