SolarWinds Database Platform installer - SA permissions for SQL

I am in the process of standing up SolarWinds for the first time. We are installing NCM and NPM. The main platform server is separate from the SQL server. However, our SQL server has several databases already running on it. SolarWinds documentation recommends that the account performing the installation needs SA access to the SQL server so that it can create the databases and accounts that will be talking to them. However, we need to know if this installer will interact with the other databases on the SQL server. I have submitted a ticket to support and talked to multiple techs on the phone who have been unable to tell me exactly what the installer does (as far as SQL is concerned) or provide the SQL in a text file that will show us what its doing.

Anyone able to shed some light on this?

There's probably an awful lot of SQL in text files, if you look through the installation logs you can see a number of them, it's not very human-readable

The main thing this is for as far as I'm aware is to create the logs and netflow dbs if you've not got em already. It's not to deal with other stuff installed on the same sql server

I'd super recommend not having SolarWinds share sql with another service in general

We just create blank databases manually before running the installer then grant DBOwner rights only to the databases used by SolarWinds. As @AdamBeedel mentioned it's a better practive to use your own DB server. We would occasionally run in to issues when we were running a shared server.

Hey BobMarley, Thank you for the reply. Do you happen to know if the name of the DB matters? Can't find it in the release notes for the installers

You can use your own names, I don't use the default ones. During the installation you will be asked if you want to create a new database or connect to an existing one, choose connect to existing. Then you can type in the database name and chose authentication method and put in the password.
