Failover Cluster Monitoring

We are currently look at how to set up a monitor on SolarWinds for two failover cluster servers.

At the moment we have a failover cluster which means when one server is up the other one shouldn't be reporting until its been failover.

If we say X is the  Main Server and Y is the Secondary Server

We are trying to look at ways in which server Y doesn't show any issues if server X is still the primary server that our system is running off however we still want to be able to monitor it.

Is there anything in SolarWinds that allows us to say ' If X is running don't monitor Y' or something along those lines.

At the moment Y is showing one of the SQL services being down however this is expected as it isn't running as the primary server. In theory we don't want this to alert unless Y is the primary server.

The Windows service monitor allows you to set the 'down' to 'Not Running' which turns blue and the app isn't down. But of course this means that you need to write your alert correctly, looking for at least 1 of the two services 'Running'. 

Alternatively, if you are using SQL Availability groups, you can check the status of the listener IP not the server. 

You can also use performance counters, or PowerShell scripts to grab specific checks. 

I recommend starting small and addressing what you need as you go.
