Advanced Alert Frequency

Is there a way to have an advanced alert trigger it's action every n cycles?

We'd like to get notifications every hour of nodes down, but would like to get the first notification immediately. I'm concerned that setting :check this alert every 1 hour: will delay our initial notification of a node down. However, setting it to 1 minute means we're notified... every minute.

How are people dealing with this type of issue?

When you create a trigger action, there's a tab called Alert Escalation. On that tab, you can set the action to be repeated every X minutes/hours/days while the alert is triggered.

I misunderstood that to mean that it would repeat every time the alert was triggered causing cascading actions. I'll try this - thanks a ton!

I understood the Alert Frequency to mean that the advanced alert engine will scan the DB at the set interval looking for ANY elements that are in an alert state. If it finds any, the alert will fire again.

Is that the correct understanding, Denny?

That was how I read it as well. This is why I was concerned that adding escalation rules of every hour would result in additional cascading alerts.

I believe an Alert Trigger, is an Alert Trigger. If it is Triggered, it will not Trigger another Alert of the same type.

So if you set an Alert to Trigger immediately, it will Trigger and perform the Trigger action (sending an email). UNLESS you set that Action to repeat, that will be the only notification you get get on that Trigger until it clears.

The only way it will Trigger again, is if it clears, then Triggers again.

This is how we're seeing it behave in 9.5.1. If an Alert Triggers, it looks at the Trigger action, and sends an email. If we have it set to repeat the action every 10 minutes (or 1 hour in your case), you will NOT also be getting an email every minute. You'll only get one every 10 minutes until it clears (or optionally, if you set it, until it is acknowledged).

Can this be done for Basic alerts. I have set basic alerts for Volume percent used and need to trigger repeat alerts every 6 hours till the alert is cleared.

Basic alerts are exactly that "basic" and don't provide nearly the flexibility that you get with advanced alerts. This is not going to be possible with basic alerts, my personal recommendation would be to not use basic alerts at all. As best I can tell they are only still in the product because of legacy purposes.
