Assistance with using PowerShell to monitor a folder for files

Hello -

We have a need to check a folder on an SFTP server for the existence of a file. If the file is there monitor will be happy and not do anything. If the file is not there I need to send out an alert.

I have not worked with using Solarwinds and PowerShell scripts so if anyone could direct me to some documentation they found helpful that would be great. I would like to learn more about this process. SAM has a bunch of built in monitors that I found and I did find a few things here on THWACK.

The default "File Existence Monitor" uses a specifically named file; no PowerShell is necessary.

I will start there and hopefully the end users are looking for something easy.

So that works great with static files but can this be configured to check for file names that change? We have files generated hourly that we need to verify that they make it to a folder on an SFTP server. I setup the File Existence Monitor to check for the file names with a wild card which works but I need to see if this can be expanded to check for files generated hourly. Thanks!

Now we are looking at Powershell territory. There are a couple in the Shared Templates on Thwack that I've used for this scenario. These are well written and documented to follow along as examples as well.

File Age Monitor (Wildcard) - Setup the alert to trigger if *filename*, if older than 61 minutes. That way, you can alert if an expected file didn't show up in the last hour. I've used this with UNC paths as well successfully.

File & Folder Details (PowerShell) - This will give you many details on the folder. If the files that you are looking for are the only ones in the folder and they modify the parent path last modified time stamp, you can alert on Age of Parent Path (seconds ago)

I found both of the scripts and downloaded them but I have not found the too much on the documentation side. I did have to make sure WINRM was working from polling engine to nodes (I did not address this when I installed SAM 2020.2)
