Activate License on New Orion Server

Hi,

I have a question on migrating NPM and other modules licenses.

Current Environment: Orion platform 2020.2.5 with NPM, SAM, IPAM, WPM modules with multiple issues on the database and console.

Plan: Our management team has requested to build a new SolarWinds platform with latest version on a fresh database (not to use an existing SolarWinds DB) and migrate all the ~100 servers from existing SolarWinds (v2020.2.5) to new Orion server.

Tentative plan of action:

1) Install the evaluation version of SolarWinds on new Windows Server (30 days trial).

2) Manually add all the ~100 servers to new SolarWinds.

3) Deactivate the license on Old SolarWinds (v202.2.5)

4) Activate the license on new SolarWinds.

Is the above plan of action feasible or possible??

On high level your plan is good, but few points you can consider before Implementation, Deployment and Configuration of latest version of solarwinds. I hope you should consider below steps...

1. Create a Plan with all granular details, You should consider timelines for each and everyday that when you are are completing which task.

2. Hardware and Software pre-requisites check for the latest version of solarwinds.

3. Check Database pre-requisites for solarwinds latest version.

4. If you want to re-configure any alert, reports etc., to the latest version you should export those from solarwinds old version and copy it on the new server.

5. Download and install evaluation solarwinds and its database on the respective servers.

6. It is not required or recommended by solarwinds but once the installation is done and you are able to load and login to the solarwinds console once you can restart your server that will refresh the whole server and services.

7. Then Run network discovery for all devices you want to add it into monitoring, or you can also add manually based on your efforts and bandwidth.

8. Once all devices and application are added into the monitoring you can Deactivate License on Old SolarWinds (v202.2.5).

9. And Activate the license on the new or latest version of solarwinds.

Note : Just for your information during installation of application or the Database consider to install it in the \ Drive not in the C:\ (where the System program files are installed).

Yeah that sounds like a feasible plan. I did a similar migration years ago. We spun up a new instance on trial licensing, got stuff migrated (nodes, credentials, views, alerts, reports) to where we liked, then shutdown the other system as it was redundant and moved the licensing. Please reach out to your account rep if this will take more than the 30 days of a single trial license. They can assist if you need a longer trial to complete the cutover. As you have a small environment, you may not need extra time, but know that you can get it.

Customer Service will most likely be the ones sending you the extra keys, and they are really good to work with. I actually had to use some temp licenses to complete a cutover to HCO from the module licensing in an environment recently. They were very helpful.

Replace 2) with something like

2a) Export list of devices from custom properties management, export all properties, as well as monitoring method
2b) Match all credentials to a list

2c) import credentials into new solarwinds

2d) network discovery -> IPs -> list from step 2a using creds from 2c
2e) import custom properties from 2a matching on IP

2f) export alerts/reports/UI elements/SAM monitors etc

2g) import from 2f

2h) reconfigure stuff that doesnt migrate on it's own

2i) export from new environment as in 2a, compare (excel vlookup or whatever) the differences, plan to fix what needs fixing, report on success rate.

Also I have one more query on licensing.

Since I have installed the evaluation version of SolarWinds v2023.1, it comes with all the modules of SolarWinds. However, we will be migrating license from old v2020.2.5 SolarWinds to New SolarWinds v2023.1 that includes NPM, SAM, IPAM, NCM & NTA.
So if I want to get rid of the other modules which are already in place as Out of the box in trial version, is there any way to remove it from the console?

The answer is definitely "Yes", but this has just changed so not sure of the process as of current patch. The customer service line could sort you out in a pinch.

Yes, you can but you have to be very careful while uninstalling the modules you don't want.

Method 1: You can uninstall it from the control panel by selecting the specific module.

Method 2: Under SolarWinds installed folder location (where the configuration files are present) there you will find the .exe installable under installer folder for everything when you run the specific installer for the module you want to remove it will ask you three options -

1). Change

2). Repair

3). Remove

You can just select the Remove option to remove the specific module.

Method 3: This option you can select when you have some issue with the uninstallation

Download and run the "Microsoft fix it tool", once you run it. It will list all the modules and SolarWinds services (services i am not sure it will list) there you can select the module and you can just click on uninstall and follow the process.

I may be not sure about the steps because my lap is not working now so I do not remember the exact steps for all the methods but on a high level, if you follow any of the methods it will be taken care of.

I can't find the modules. It seems like when I used offline NPM installer, by default it has considered hyper cloud observability as evaluation version v2023. So I could only see SolarWinds platform under programs & features and Observability - Orion installer as the core file in Installer folder.
