Pre-staging files for 2022.4.1 doesn't work.

I want to update our platform to 2022.4.1. Some of our servers don't have internet access so I've downloaded the offline installer. Running the installer gives me the option to download the update files ready for pre-staging. When I go into the GUI the only option I have is to download the files for 2023.1.

I've had no problems in the past pre-staging the files for an older version than the latest RC or GA release, but this time I'm stuck.

I've tried clearing c:\programdata\solarwinds\installers but that didn't help.

Solarwinds has identified an issue with pre-staging in v2022.4.1 which they say they've fixed in 2023.1.

Hey there,

Unlike the online installer, the offline installer only contains a single version of SolarWinds. Since it will always default to the newest (In this case 2023.1) could you confirm that you selected the right version from the drop-down menu when you downloaded?

Hi there, I have downloaded the 2022.4.1 installer and that's what I've pre-staged. Our main pollers have internet access and I suspect that the pre-staged files for 2022.4.1 are being ignored on the Updates and Evaluations page in favour of the more recent 2023.1 release.

Right okay, that makes more sense. Usually the only difference between the online and offline installer are that the offline also has a large folder with all the MSI files in which it uses as a source instead of some internet directory. When you are pressing "Download updates for pre-staging" you are probably (Inadvertently) turning the installer into "online" mode.

Pre-staging is an optional step for an upgrade anyway so my recommendation would be to manually copy the 2022.4.1 installer to any servers without internet (which is basically what pre-staging does) then run through the manual update as usual. (Aka not through the web console and on the server itself)

I'm doing the update the same way I've done it several times before. It's been fine every time until this one. Pre-staging a centralised update is the best way to manage our infrastructure. Manual updates are an absolute last resort.

After mounting the iso and launching the installer I have only two options. 1, Download installation files (pre-stage installation) and 2. Upgrade Now. I select option 1. I can't see how I could possibly have activated "online" mode.

I had the same issue (offline installer). Pre-stage is a known issue (I tried a lot of workarounds with support).

Upgrade the MPE, then you can jump into centralized upgrades to push to the rest of the devices.

The main reason I want to pre-stage is that 3 of our pollers have very poor network links to the main poller. Last time we did an upgrade the way you've suggested it took 8 hours to push the files out. I appreciate it's an option, but I'd rather pre-stage without upgrading the MPE's first.

Agreed, and I have similar issues. Just sharing what we had to do.

Alternatively (and fact check me against support, I don't know if this would work), copy the ISO around, update the MPE, cancel the upgrade if needed, run pre-stage and resume via central upgrade / or execute the ISO.

I don't think it's the ISO that's pre-staged. When you run pre-staging the ISO is extracted and the update files are stored in C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Installers\. From there the files are copied to the other servers. Copying the files to that location on every poller manually wouldn't make a difference, Solarwinds would just overwrite them with a fresh copy when the centralised update was run.

I could install manually on every poller by copying and mounting the ISO everywhere but that would be a pain.
