APM Alerts

Hello All,

I was not sure if I should put this here or in the main forum, let me know if I should move.

I just installed the new APM. Looks cool..but I have a few questions. First, when I go into the alerts and attempt to make a new adv alert based on the apm I see choices of APM-Monitor and APM-Application. Whats the difference? If I attempt to add an alert based on app name and then app status, my status pull down only has the option of "up". Am I being forced to reverse reasoning and saying "when the application does NOT equal UP"?

Maybe I am just confused about how the APM is supposed to alert coming from the old app monitor.

APM has the concept of a "monitor", which is a discrete element. A monitor is something like "Is this service running"? APM also has the concept of an "Application", which is a collection of multiple monitors. An application is up if all the monitors are up and down if any monitor is down.

You can create an alert on specific monitors, and you can create alerts based on the Application. If you created an alert for a service monitor and for the Application that contains that service monitor, then you'd get two alerts?

Does that make sense?

Thank you for your reply. I get what you are saying about the application and monitor differences. I am still a little confused as to how I am to add an alert for the apm templates I have.

my status pull down only has the option of "up".

The drop down only shows the values currently in the database. It sounds like all your applications are up, so only Up shows in the list. You can type in "Down" to alert when the application is down.

Oh, I gotcha. I didnt know I could just add "down" if it was not in the list.
