Do I need Server and Application Monitor module to monitor http website up/down ?

Moving from PRTG to Solarwinds.

In PRTG you can create a sensor that sends an http 'get' to a website and expects a response. So its doing a bit more than simply checking if port 80/443 is up.

We have not bought the SAM module.

We only have 1 server / probe.

I know Netpath kind of can does http monitoring.

The problem with Netpath is that it only monitors if port 80/443 is up and has a limitation count of 20 per probe ( We have lots of websites we'd like to monitor )

Is there any other way to monitor ? I'm guessing some sort of custom script / program that runs from the Solarwinds Server ???

Any help much appreciated.

SAM would be the best way because there is a component specifically for this. This is how we monitor it. There might be a way to do it with a script but I have never looked into it because we have SAM.

Can you confirm which solarwinds module you have bought, from which you want to monitor all these urls?

Also you just want to monitor UP/Down status of urls?

Because yes we have ways to monitor url's (http or the https) and if you just want to monitor UP/Down status of url's then you can use SAM, but if you want to get performance related data then you can try to have SolarWinds WPM module the link is below, please have a look.

The SAM module gives you the ability to run custom PowerShell scripts. There are example scripts on thwack that will check a URL, verify it is up, and optionally verify that there is an expected result in the result. It can also measure how long the request took for baselining. There is incredible versatility in what you can do with SAM scripting.

If you want more Netpath monitors you can deploy another NetPath Probe to a windows computer.

Current Scaleability - NetPath requirements for NPM (solarwinds.com)

You can add up to 100 paths per polling engine.
You can add up to 1,000 paths per SolarWinds Platform instance.
You can add 10 - 20 paths per probe.

We have NPM, Netflow and IPAM modules.

I guess I'm hoping for a way to monitor from NPM - and yes i am only looking to monitor up/ down of urls

cisco92, what did you end up doing? i'm trying the same thing. we have sam on one network which makes it fairly easy. the other network we dont have sam and like i said im trying to figure it out.

Hi guys.

I'm looking for something similar. 

I'm a HCO Essentials newbie and I just want to control url's up or down, just like that. 

I try "web link monitor" but says 

"Unexpected error occurred. Exception: Unknown or unsupported probe type SolarWinds.APM.Probes.WebLinkProbe"
