8.1 Multiple pollers

Question

So I'm looking for a second polling engine for Orion 8.1.

I'm not sure how this is supposed to be done so I'll share what I want to be able to do.

I have multiple cities.  Currently, my only Orion installation is in City A.  I have a national network.  If I ever lose an uplink or two to City A, I cannot poll, I cannot generate email because City A emails through City B and so forth.

How will a second poller help me here?  Is it possible to alert, email, log, etc, through a second poller, considering the SQL server could be unreachable on the primary poller installation?

What does a second poller accomplish?

A hot standby would be your best bet if your looking for some type of fail over. Once you install the hot-standby you just select the server you want it to backup in the event the primary server fails. One thing support recommended to our group was to seperate our pollers from the DB server. Our DB server does not actively poll our network.. One more thing you might want to consider.

Hmm, so sounds like having a hot standby system in a different location apart from the sql server really won't help me out at all.

I know we were looking at some sort of solution that could work autonomously from the primary installation yet use the same data.

If the the primary poller fails to be updated, the hot-standby system will take over and begin polling the devices of the failed polling engine. When the failed poller is restored and begins to update, the hot-standby system will return to a standby/idle state.
