How to monitor optical traffic on an interface?

I have Ciena 5171s that are running one 100G port as a CFP2 optic. I can add that interface and it shows whether it is up or down, but I do not receive any utilization statistics. In fact, the one physical interface shows up as three components when I list resources. Each interface shows a ? under Interface Type and have the following different labels on each: "Optical Channel", "OTN Optical channel Transport Unit" and "OTN Optical Data Unit". I did a MIB walk to see if there was anything of note in there, but I'm not finding where I can pull traffic statistics. This has just been something that has always worked with Solarwinds. All the other ports are reporting as expected including QSFP28 100G ports.

Any suggestions on what I might need to do to monitor an optical channel's usage statistics? I've made universal device pollers using OIDs, but I'm not sure how to complete that for just an interface.

As I was reading your post, my head was going UnDP, UnDP (almost chant like) and then I hit the final line

It's an interesting question, and not one I have had to navigate the challenge of, but having seen this thread: https://thwack.solarwinds.com/product-forums/network-performance-monitor-npm/f/forum/68236/interface-name-in-undp then I would say it is very much doable. Secondly, the fact that you can "assign pollers" to interfaces via Manage Nodes would also suggest it is doable.

It can't hurt to just build a UnDP using the interface OID and then assign it to see what you get. There is nothing in the UnDP tool that states the OID must be for a node. If it doesn't work you can always just delete.

I've got a ticket open with Ciena trying to find what MIB I need to even use to get the traffic statistics, but so far getting no where. When I go through the mib list and test, most don't seem to work on the device, so a bit at a loss here.

Start by navigating to the node's Node Details view. In there, find the Node Details resource and copy the SYSOBJECTID string.
On the SolarWinds Platform server, open up Universal Device Poller and click New Universal Device Poller. In the OID: field, paste the SYSOBJECTID string that you copied earlier. If your model is similar to mine, then you should have an OID resembling 1.3.6.1.4.1.1271.1

After pasting the SYSOBJECTID, the Name field in Universal Device Poller should automatically update to cienaCommon. If that is the case, then you have successfully located the root of ciena's MIB that has been added to the SolarWinds platform. From here you can click on Browse MIB Tree to navigate through the tree of OIDs and test them to see if you get a response. Remember to select your device in the Select a device: section to the right, or else you'll only get Test failed results.

Mind you, you might get Test failed results even if you selected the correct device to test. That would indicate that the OID for your device is not supported. Keep testing until you get one that works.

Make sure that Ciena has SNMP usage counters on the optic layer it could be that Ciena do not do that..

I've dug through a lot of these MIBs testing them with no luck. It's like the 5171 is combining products that they never fully tested MIBs on. I can get every other port, even 100G QSFP28, to work just fine. It's just this silly optical port that doesn't fit into the Waveserver or 6500 family.

I did get a response from Ciena support that gave me a MIB here, but CFP2 port 1/1 is still not even reporting a name. I pushed this back to Ciena.

I've been testing the Waveserver and 6500 options, but those don't tend to work. I've pushed it back to Ciena to see what they can tell me further.
