Can you schedule a report to be emailed in the excel format or do you have to manually export the report once it has run?

I just ran across this so I can give a partial answer. I recently had a user that had built a Custom Chart, and could not export it to Excel when they ran it and also could not attach an Excel to a Scheduled Report Email. I re-wrote the report in SWQL to be a Custom Table and then then user was able to Export to Excel when loading the report as well as schedule it to email an Excel.
A Custom Table allowed me to use this in the Upper Right corner of the report
I can do that once I run the report but to do it in schedule manager it does mention Custom table required. I will look into that.
Yes, custom table resources will have the email option for Excel or .CSV
