How can I determine if my existing Main Polling Engines VM specification requires scale up?

Hi People,

I have one SAM Main Polling Engine that utilizes Server & Application Monitor - AL1100 license model.

8 vCPU
32 GB vRAM

all of the licenses have been used for the application template monitoring and 400+ other Server object polling across five different states (Geographical locations)

May I know if I need to deploy an Additional Polling Engine on each Data Center site or do I scale up my current main Polling Engine in my HQ Data Center?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think over 2000 nodes are supported for an engine; this article might help: https://documentation.solarwinds.com/en/success_center/orionplatform/content/orion_platform_scalability_engine_guidelines.htm

Do you need one? Take a look at your polling statistics under All Settings -> Polling Engines
That should give you an idea how well you are keeping up.
The second data center you might want a dedicated engine if you have issues with connectivity. Typically, it's not required.

You don't mention a plan to expand the number of nodes you are monitoring.

There is a limit to the amount of CPU/memory that a Solarwinds poller will use(I forget what it is). Taking a practical approach, you can look at your CPU usage - Is it starting to flatline at 100%? If so then adding vCPU cores can help.

Likewise memory. Is it mostly being used? if not then adding memory (easy with vmware) can help. If there is spare memory that is not being used, then adding more will not help.

Lastly look at the polling stats. If memory/cpu has been usefullly oncreased as much a it can already, and the polling is starting to lag, then it is worth adding an APE.

I lean toward putting additional pollers om the same place (with a stretched network over two DCs, possibly the secondary DC). If there are latency issues monitoring your other data centers, then that may be a reason to put a poller in another DC.
