SAM Assigned Application Monitor IIS

Reviewing over our licensing we are over our limit especially for the Applnsight for IIS. The issue that I am trying to figure out is my server is showing licensed components 30 and active components 535. How do I see the 535 active components so we can identify if we need to purchase a larger license or disable some polling? There are other servers also over on the active components. Also the application detail does show Due to licensing constraints, application polling is disabled. To obtain a larger license, call Solarwinds Customer Service. Version SAM HF1: 2020 2.6

I believe if you edit each application monitor, you can pick and choose what is monitored. However, if you are talking about any of the AppInsight modules, my understanding is you can't change the licensing cost. If you create your own application monitor, you can put exactly what you want in there. But even if you disable parts of an AppInsight monitor, the licensing cost will stay the same.

If you have the older AL component based licensing, you will be limited by number of monitored components. The licensing page will have something like "Allowed number of component monitors" and your total/licensed component monitors.

You can review your applications/component monitor counts in the Manage Assigned Application Monitors page.

Some application templates have a fixed amount of licenses used when you assign them:

AppInsight for Active Directory - 50 components
AppInsight for Exchange - 50 components
AppInsight for IIS - 30 components
AppInsight for SQL - 50 components
Windows Scheduled Tasks - 5 components

If you have the newer node-based licensing, it will draw down a license for that server when you have any application monitor assigned to the node regardless of how many components you are monitoring on it.

Generally, the legacy licensing works more efficient/cheaper if you have a lot of servers with minimal components required per server. And the node-based licensing is better if you have a smaller number of nodes and want to monitor a lot of components per server (and/or lots of AppInsights).

When it comes to things like AppInsight for IIS/SQL - I usually ask if you really need every single IIS or SQL Express, etc monitored on every server or just your key ones. Removing the ones you don't need will a) reduce the load on your server/database, b) potentially reduce your licensing requirements. For example, I had one client monitor Windows Scheduled Tasks on 500+ servers "because the Discovery had it as an option" but they never looked at it/used it/cared about it. Another turned on about 20x AppInsight for SQL monitors for SQL Express instances they didn't care about.
