HTTP Post to a Webserver using Solarwinds Orion API & SDK

We have a requirement to forward all traps/syslogs from OLV to a WebServer(supports only API connections). Could anyone kindly advise if this can be achieved via Solarwinds Orion API. We can only use HTTP POST from Solarwinds server. Any inbound connection to Orion is not allowed as per policies.

We tried the Alert integration option through custom rules within OLV, but since Orion alert frequency can be set to minimum at 15 seconds, there were a lot of traps for whom alerts were not triggered.

As you have found, the alerting engine with the HTTPS post inbuilt capability is not going to work in this use case. There is no internal mechanism to support this feature, as OLV is not designed to act as an intermediary for log data, rather an end point for processing in relation to monitoring visibility.

Therefore, I would suggest you look to implement a solution which acts as a proxy for log data, forwards required events in syslog/trap form to Orion and also forwards to your web API application. Devices send to this app, this app forwards on to 2 destinations in the appropriate protocol. I have looked at the SolarWinds Kiwi solution and this does not have a native HTTPS Post action, but does support script actions. Otherwise you need to find a syslog/trap application which can forward in HTTP POST form.

Doing a http post for every trap can be alot of extra traffic and threads if there are alot of traps. If you have alot of traps I don't think this is a very good idea.

If it's possible with just a medium amount of traps? Theoretically maybe but probably not practially. I guess you could set something up within Orion SQL to do that, some kind of trigger there but I don't know how that will affect performance.

Sorry, I have no good solution.

Thank you for your recommendation! We are still trying to figure out a way, there is an option within OLV custom rule actions to execute a script, I hope that can be leveraged.

Thank you! We also have an option to execute script within the OLV custom rule actions. We would need to look if that will work. Pass all trap information via HTTPS POST using a script.
