Set all interfaces as Unplugged not Down.

Good morning fellow Thwackers

I've been reading through a lot of the old posts about SQL hacks to change interfaces from Down to unplugged.

Most of them go back 3 - 6 years.

The only solution I can see is a SQL query and change.

With the large amount of nodes across our estate, I'm wondering if anyone has found an easy way to bulk change all ports to Unplugged rather than Down, Or....... are there any plans to build it into SolarWind, to set ALL ports on a switch to show as unplugged and not down in the near future. If so I'll wait lol

First off - I don't have an answer [because my coding skills are pants] but I'm always interested in any post where someone is trying to do something in bulk as it is one of my bugbears about SolarWinds.

Secondly I confess to being intrigued as to why you'd want to set them this way. Irrespective of the reason, My guess is you are flood monitoring all interfaces on all devices and just want to get rid of the red blobs.

So, the caveat is always that you shouldn't mess directly with your DB, and instead do this via the API using PowerShell and SWQL (a variant of SQL). The process would be - craft your SWQL query to identify the ports in question and then craft your powershell script to execute the query. If you have SWQL Studio deployed, then I suggest starting to look at 'Cirrus.Interfaces' and for an OperStatus = '2' - so the query would look like:

SELECT NodeID, InterfaceID, InterfaceIndex, InterfaceDescription, 
InterfaceName, InterfaceAlias, InterfaceType, 
InterfaceTypeName, InterfaceTypeDescription, AdminStatus, 
OperStatus, PhysicalInterface

FROM Cirrus.Interfaces

WHERE OperStatus = '2'

I've left in the other fields as they may prove of interest to further filter out VLANs for example. But with the above, you then essentially wrap it in a PowerShell (other coding languages are available) script that would iteratively go through each interface identified as OperStatus 2 (i.e. down) and flip it to OperStatus = '10'.

It it probably possible to use an alert action to get this done. You will need to run a script as the action and use the script to set the interface status.

I was blinkered to the red blobs as the main ones I want to change.
But having said that do you know if a currently live port then shows as unplugged if it is actually unplugged or will it show as down because of this amazing tick box

It's a tricky one. We need the switches to identify a cable plugged in but not live as Down and a port with no cable in it as unplugged. I'll give CISCO a shout to build that into the next level routers/switches.

I'm like yourself and have limited coding skills so would probably get another team involved to look at that.
With the information you've provided above I'm sure I can get one of the team to steam through it for me.

All the post I've seen on this are quite old, so I was just reaching out in total despair that there is another tick box that has materialised somewhere since the last posts lol

Again I'm guessing this is for security purposes to stop unwanted APs or hubs for eg being plugged in and used**. In which case I'd not monitor them at all, but physically have them shutdown on the switch. Of course YMMV.

Hello..Even if you manage to set the status as unplugged instead of down do you wonder what will happen during next snmp poll. obviously SW will detect the status as down instead of unplugged & may be it will reset to down status again.

Just a hypothetical thought.
