Probably a NOOB question but need some help.

Looking to integrate a large number of devices into our enterprise deployment (+200 devices to monitor) and having some challenges. In short the built in MIB database doesn’t cover all the particulars with the asset type in question and I’m having to create TON of universal pollers to get the data i want out of these assets. I’ve got the basics on how to create an alert based on poller output, but i want to put together something with alittle bit of a wow factor or a gee wizz graphic on the view of the asset.

Basically I would like to create some kinda flashing light or visual indicator to indicate this component on that asset is is a failure or warning mode. The asset in question has multiple modules so one module with an issue doesn't mean everything is broke, kinda like a switch with a switchport down.

If you prefer to have a nice looking dashboard with a summary of potential issues (instead of raw statistics), then I would recommend Modern Dashboard.

One disadvantage of Modern Dashboards is that you need create custom SWQL queries. I think you would need to do it anyway, because as you mentioned, there are few factors to be involved, in order to calculate a proper status.

On the other hand, if you want to use your own graphics (or using google charts), then you need to use Classic Views (Classic Dashboards).

I can give you some pointers, but it would be easier if you could provide a specific use case/specific example.

Also, you mentioned about creating ton of universal pollers. I am wondering, if this is necessary? I am often creating UnDP pollers using GET TABLE and simply extracting the information from interesting rows (on the widget level). It would of course depend on the type of statistics.

I’ve explored using get tables and it doesn’t work out as cleanly as you would think/hope. These devices are not traditional IT devices which is part of the challenge.

As for the graphics usage having a typical red,green,yellow circle/indicator is AOK. Just as long as i can label them in some custom way.

Also when there is an alert on the asset i would love for the asset node status to show a small colorization that there is something amiss with the summary of the issue below it. Right now the alert I’ve purposely set off which shows up in the alert block doesn't change the node status globe. I want to use something similar to the icons shown here. thwack.solarwinds.com/.../message-center-icons

"Not traditional IT devices" sounds very interesting I would need to investigate more. Do you have SAM license, or could you purchase it? There is an option in SAM to monitor SNMP using custom scripts, maybe this would help? I have done this for Juniper RPM operations (in which the operation name is encoded as numbers within the OID itself)

If you have custom SNMP values to monitor, the overall Node status can be tricky. You can have thresholds for UnDP pollers, but those will not change the overall status of the device (not even a child status). The only way to change the child status of a Node (with custom SNMP values) is to assign SAM template with SNMP monitor.

Those custom icons from your example (message center) can be used within widgets, that is quite easy via SWQL (custom query and table widgets). The goal is to configure monitoring in such a way, that this status reflects what you need.
