Monitor Database Availability.

Hello,
I want to monitor the availability of an oracle database.
It would be enough for me to execute a TNSPING and graph the result.
Do you suggest any way to do it easily?
We are new to Solarwinds and we see that there are many possibilities.

TNSping will only show that the listener is up. You need to do a simple query to the database to know that it is up and available.

Ok, but with a TNSPING I don't need an account on the database.

Anyway, Do you have a tutorial to create an alert with a query to the database?
As I mentioned, we are starting with solarwinds.

To properly build a monitor you would use TNSping and an actual query.

Before you query the database you would check with TNSPing to ensure the listener is up. If it is not, then the database is not reachable. If it is, then you can run your query to ensure the database is up and responding. Please note there are several states the database can be in which will determine the resultant return code or message.

I haven't set up an Oracle monitor in almost a decade. There are quite a few steps involved. First you need to install the Oracle Client (used to, not sure if this is the case anymore), configure the TNSnames.ora with the DB/listener info. You will need read access to the database in question or at least one of the tables via a login and password to Oracle.

I am forgetting the finer details at this point. One thing to note, in time this sort of monitoring can grow to specific queries to notate problems where they want you to run "this". It is best to have them provide "this query" as a stored procedure so you don't have access to the query. That way when things change they are responsible for updating the query and your code does not have to change.
