Grafana

We're trying to find a way to import some information from Solarwinds into Grafana. I am not a developer, and I've been tasked with just generating the key. Unfortunately, I am never given a straight answer when I open a ticket with Solarwinds as to what type of key needs to be generated.

Hello,

I am not familiar with grafana and we do not have a concept of a key that I am familiar with. Can you describe what your process looks like? It is relatively easy to query data from Orion using the API, there are some examples of how to do this on our API wiki https://github.com/solarwinds/OrionSDK/wiki

If I remember correct Grafana wants to as SQL queries right against the database to create its graphs. So it need a readonly account in the SQL database and then you need to know what queries to ask.

Nothing is prepared for that so it's just to start from the beginning.

Thank you for the responses, but is there any information as to what is required to enable to REST api? I couldn't find any clear cut documentation explaining it. I then reached out to support via a ticket, and have yet to receive a response.

Side note,I can honestly say that the community is more knowledgeable and responsive as a whole than my limited experiences with the support department, and that's rather unfortunate.

The Orion API is not a supported feature of the platform and our support team is not equipped to handle questions related to custom development like this, as you mentioned the community is a great resource to learn and get help. What language will be used for this project?

You can either query the SQL server directly or use this old plugin https://github.com/etichy/grafana-swis-datasource to query the SolarWinds API

I port information to/from Solarwinds to several other platforms. What is the information that you are trying to share?

The specific information is the number of registered wireless access points from a Cisco Wireless Controller. The controller reports the connected aps to Solarwinds already. I still haven't received a straight answer as to what needs to be done to enable the REST api.

All I want is a specific set of instructions to enable the API. How to use the API itself will be up to our developers.

The REST API does not need to be enabled in any way, it is part of the information service. The examples here should be enough for any developer easily make queries to pull this data out

Your developers will need to install the Solarwinds Software Development Kit which is available at Github then write a simple SWQL query or powershell script to pull the data out. The SDK includes SWQL Studio and the Powershell Plug-in the developers will need.

Just a username and password really. Solarwinds communicates with itself using an API so its always enabled.

SW dev kit with SWQL Studio helps a lot. Purple icons are API calls. Most of the time you'll just use a query.

The query you probably want is:

SELECT DisplayName, IPAddress, ThinAPsCount FROM Orion.Wireless.Controllers

The call (using curl for Windows) would look like this:

curl.exe -k -u <MyOrionUsername>:<MyOrionPassword> https://<myOrionServerName.domain.local>:17778/SolarWinds/InformationService/v3/Json/Query?query=SELECT+DisplayName%2c+IPAddress%2c+ThinAPsCount+FROM+Orion.Wireless.Controllers

Just replace "<MyOrionServerName.domain.local>", "<MyOrionUsername>", and "<MyOrionPassword>" with things specific to your environment.

(Example below with a different query)

(I'm making a best guess about the query at the beginning because I don't have any Wireless LAN Controllers in my lab, so there might be a typo)

Basically the query endpoint would be:

https://myOrionServer.domain.local:17778/SolarWinds/InformationService/v3/Json/Query

Then you just send it: ?query=<the query you want to call>

You authenticate it with an Orion username & password (blurred in my above image). I like to setup a read-only admin account for calls like this to other systems.
