New to Solarwinds and I have been handed a non-active Solarwinds environment

Hello All,

I have just been handed a Solarwinds environment and I have never used Solarwinds before.

Our end goal is get these back in service. To try and simplify this, our current environment versions are as follows:

NPM (Network Performance Manager)
- Our Current Version: 2020.2.1

NTA (Network Traffic Analyzer)
- Our Current Version: 2020.2.1

SAM (Server and Application Monitoring)
- Our Current Version: 2020.2.1

NCM (Network Configuration Manager)
- Our Current Version: 2020.2

NTM (Network Topology Mapper)
- Version was not listed

We have two VMs, 1 with all the modules and 1 with the NTA database. We have all of the SolarWinds services disabled on our two VMs and the NIC disabled on these VMs. I have opened up a ticket already but seem to be having trouble getting a response.

My main question is going to be, are there any hotfixes/updates that should be applied before getting everything back up to par and on the network?

Hi i am not a pro Solarwind but

first off check your solarwind licence if it has expired or not on the web console solar will tell if there is an expired licence on the notificaton bell or on the top most banner.

next you can try to start all the solarwind service in start panel>SolarWinds Orion>Service manager and then click on the button start everithing

for hotfixes you can dowload them in the setting>My orion deployement>update and evaluation.

@jerrysInge is on the right track. It should be safe for you to put this on online by re-enabling the NICs and starting services. Then run windows updates, and then all the Orion ones with the update page. There is an offline installer you can download if you want to update Orion first. I would consider Orion updates as routine maintenance, and every release tends to include security fixes and improvements.

On the other hand, consider a clean install of Windows and Orion. You likely don't have important data there anymore if its been offline for so long, and you can grab whatever you were monitoring and rediscover them in a new system. You can export and import alerts and dashboards that are custom. Depending on how much you did with the old system, it may be simpler to start clean.

I went ahead and got all the services restarted and the NIC connected. Upon trying to launch the Solarwinds web exe, I realized that our certificate has been revoked due to the March 8th deadline. Correct me if I am wrong, but since we did not update before then, we will have to do a fresh install? Would this wipe the current config or is there a way to save it?

You can update your certs and then continue with upgrading. No need to start from scratch.
