Generate an alert if the systemUptime is less than 60000 ticks (600 second = 10 minutes)
Why not use Last boot time has changed? it is one of default alerts in NPM
Because that is actually set when the SNMP service restarts not when the device has restarted.
Last boot time parameter? is set when snmp services is restarted?
The standard NPM alert works of the sysUptime mib-2 variable which is the time since the SNMP service was (re)started. On older networking equipment you could rarely restart the SNMP service without restarting the switch/router, but now SNMP is becoming pervasive and it's on windows and Unix systems it's possible for the agent to restarted, and now you get false alerts in NPM, which is irritating.
The new(er) HOST_RESOURCES MIB contains many new and interesting values, for example the installed software and more importantly for this post the systemUptime (ticks since the operating system started) which is way more useful for servers.
Thanks this has been really helpful for me. I monitor only network equipment, so i have not encountered false alarms yet.
Hi,
I'm trying to do this very thing and i have downloaded the UnDP and AlertDefinition you have linked above.
I imported the UnDP into the server without issue.
When i try to import the AlertDefinition i get an error "Alert import failed with error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.". I'm looking for a fix to this error BUT it's not my install and i'm trying to reverse engineer what they did and how it's configured.
Could i persuade you to screen capture each screen so i can recreate the alert?
Many thanks if you can.
Ian
as an update on this and in case someone else has the same issue as i did, SolarWinds support managed to import into a test system, then export it and sent it to me.
The exported version from their system worked on my system.
I would upload the new export but i can't see a way to attach files.
Could you send me the exported alert definition? thx
