How to include fields from "Group" and "Node" in query

Hello,

I'm trying to write a new alert for when our remote routers go down...

I was expecting to use something like this...

Select Group WHERE

Group Name = "Router Group"

Group Status = "Down"

Group Member Node Custom Property (SiteTier) = A

I realise that there are no custom properties for groups, but is it possible to use the custom properties assigned to members of a group as the basis of an alert?

There may be another way of doing it... I was planning to use groups of routers to get around the complexities of our "redundant" links...

e.g. Group: "Site 1" contains "Site 1 Router A" and "Site 1 Router B"

If I configure the group to show the best status, the alert would only trigger when both routers are down.

How have others dealt with this?

So, I figured out how to do what I wanted very easily without needing custom SQL.

All I did was create two parent groups - one for "Site Class A" and one for "Site Class B" and I added the relevant sites into the groups. Then I created a "Group Member" rule that says "Group Name = Site Class A" and "Group Member Status = Down" and that was it

Made the same rule for Site Class B and I have no problems.

I guess there are a few variables that are not available because its the group member that I'm actually interested in, but I think I should be ok.

Unfortunately I don't have a live system to play with this morning or I'd give you a more solid answer, but it looks like you could accomplish this using a 'Custom SQL' alert of type 'Group'. The alert is based off the information that comes from a view in the database called 'Containers_AlertsAndReportsData'. After looking at that view's definition I do see a Nodes.NodeID entry, so...

It did pass validation when I tested it against a known-good custom property but YMMV. If you want a hand tinkering with this at some point this week PM me.

Hi Alex,

I'm a little unclear on what you are trying to accomplish. For a case where there is a remote site with redundant paths you could group the remote routers or interfaces and set to best status as you indicate. from there the alert is easy. You can use the built in "group down" alert or qualify it to a specific group as shown here. Group alert.jpg

You've basically got what I want to do, but there is an additional requirement, which is the part I dont understand.

I need to Tier my sites... so.

Site Class A

Site 1

Site 2

Site Class B

Site 3

Site 4

I need to have one response for router group down from a site in Site Class A and a different response for Site Class B.

I originally thought I could use a custom variable on the nodes inside the router groups to identify which site class the group is in...

I guess I could also have "site 1 and 2" and a group called "Site Class A" and use that as the way of defining which alert to run.

(Either way, I'm not sure how to do it)

Does that make more sense?

To best answer I need to know the scale of the network. How many sites and site classes are we looking at? How many sites per class? Does this change much or are the number of items static?

At the moment, there will be 9 "A Sites" and 17 "B Sites". We tried to limit it to two classes to keep the alerting nice and simple. At the moment, most of the "router groups" will only have one node in them, but there are several with two nodes, and this is a project at the moment, so I would expect most to have two nodes in the future.

Nodes at these particular sites are going to be split into 3 tiers, but I dont think that is relevant to this particular alert.

These will come and go (mining/engineering company) .
