How is CPU load calculated for VMWare guest w/o CPU reservation?

We have a VM windows Guest with 8 CPU but reservation is not configured in VMWare, so each CPU could be allocated  from 1GHz to 3 GHz max depending on the need.   So my question is around CPU spikes we see that clear quickly.  When Solarwinds reports CPU utilization is the GHz allocated part of a calculation Solarwinds performs, or is Solarwinds pulling from one specific WMI class?

We are trying to determine if the CPU spikes are clearing because VMware is reacting or not.

Hi there, 

SolarWinds is pulling 2 different values, but essentially both are doing the same thing, just from different places.

One is pulled from the VMWare API and takes the current CPU usage at that point in time, and divides it by the total allocated CPU also at that point in time to create a percentage. 

The other one will be from WMI and this is doing the same thing, creating a percentage from the CPU load vs CPU capacity. 

At no time does SolarWinds actually store the used GHz value as a metric although it may return it as an intrinsic property of the node. 

This is different from things like Volume Size where SolarWinds DOES record this change over time.
