Migrating NPM 10.4.1 on Windows 2008 R2 to latest NPM release on Windows 2016

Hello all,

I am researching into how to migrate my existing NPM 10.4.1 to the latest NPM 2020.2.6 release. My current Orion NPM server is running on Windows 2008 R2 with SQL server 2008 R2. I am planning to build out two new 2016 servers, one server will be running the latest Orion NPM 2020.2.6 and the other server will be hosting SQL 2016 SP1. 

The plan is the new Orion NPM server will be using the same IP as the existing Orion NPM server. This way I don't need to update all my nodes, and follow the steps below.

1. Build out the new SQL server and new Orion NPM server

2. Migrate existing SQL DB over to new SQL 2016 server

3. Install latest 2020.2.6 Orion NPM on new server

4. run Configuration Wizard from new Orion NPM server to connect to new SQL 2016 server

5. Migrate licenses over to new Orion NPM server

Please let me know if there is anything that I missed !!! I very much appreciate any inputs / suggestions !!!!

Hi there, 

My company performs a lot of upgrades and migrations for SolarWinds Customers. Because of this I know first-hand that unfortunately NPM 10.4.1 is not compatible with a direct jump to 2020.2.6, you will have to do a few smaller upgrades first. 

SolarWinds has an upgrade planner here that can be quite beneficial: https://customerportal.solarwinds.com/support/product-upgrade-advisor

From that it suggests:

1. Upgrade Network Performance Monitor from version 10.4.1 to version 11.0.1
2. Upgrade Network Performance Monitor from version 11.0.1 to version 12.0
3. Upgrade Network Performance Monitor from version 12.0 to version 2020.2.6
