Requirement | Details |
SAM 6.8 or VMAN 8.4, or later | If running earlier product versions, upgrade to extend monitoring capabilities for UCS devices. |
Polling method | Use ICMP or SNMP for UCS devices. |
| |
| SolarWinds recommends using the "Most Devices: SNMP and ICMP" polling option to gather data from UCS controllers, chassis, blades, and rack servers. |
| |
| For fabric interconnects, the polling method must be SNMP. All SNMP versions are supported. |
Cisco UCS Manager credentials | The credentials used to access the UCS Manager web portal and monitor B-series or C-series blade servers. |
| |
| UCS uses Role-Based Access Control (RBAC). The related account requires a role with sufficient Read access to monitor UCS devices. |
UCS listening port | The port on which the UCS Manager listens to devices, as configured in the UCS Manager web portal. Default values are 80 for HTTP and 443 for HTTPS. |
API access | The Orion Platform main polling engine or Additional Polling Engine (APE) — whichever type polls the node — must have access to the UCS API. |
Fabric interconnects | Verify that fiber interconnects have external IP addresses. If the external gateway, external IP address, or external mask are set to 0.0.0.0, update the IP address. |
| |
| 1. Log into the Cisco UCS Manager web portal |
| 2. Provide external IP addresses for the external gateway, external IP address, or external mask. |
Problem: Voting UCS does not provide data for fabric interfaces.
Verify the following items:
Make sure there is a child node for fabric interconnection below the mother connector for the UCS controller. See Add nodes for devices connected to UCS controllers on the Orion platform.
For fabric interconnections, the voting system should be SNMP.
Make sure the fiber interfaces have external IP addresses. If the external portal, external IP address, or external mask is set to 0.0.0.0, update the IP address.
Orion Platform Main Voting Engine or Extra Voting Engine (APE) - UCS clusters must have access to the UCS API for any poll
Problem: Setting a UCS plane as a node on the Orion platform does not change even if you select the operating system interface.
When you add a node to the UCS plane, you must specify which network interface to use to monitor the plane:
Management interface: Use the management interface to monitor the plane. When you add the node, the IP address is automatically settled with the information obtained from the parent BMC controller during the SNMP poll.
Operating system interface: Use this method to monitor a wide range of data levels, such as hardware health, through its built-in operating system. To add a link, you must provide its IP address, because polls take place in a layer of OSI mode that does not capture IS addresses.
If you select the operating system interface option but no changes are made, the plane may have contacts with other Orion platform companies based on its IP address, as configured in the following product versions:
NPM 12.4 and earlier
SAM 6.7.1 and earlier
VMAN 8.3 and earlier
In previous product versions, if the blade was connected to other nodes, the network interface used for the blade could not be moved from the management interface to the operating system interface. This logic protects existing node connections based on the blade IP address provided by the management interface.
To work around this functionality, remove the blade nodes from the Orion platform and reassemble it.
Problem: Users need to be alerted when certification errors occur.
By default, the Orion platform is configured to ignore certificate errors when monitoring UCS devices. If desired, you can update that setting on the Global tab on the Advanced Configuration page of the Orion Web Console.
Before proceeding, note the following details about this activity:
Generally, you should not change any of the advanced configuration settings except in the KB article or on the instructions of the Solar Winds Support Team.
IgnoreCertificateError settings apply only to nodes added by Cisco UCS Manager via HTTPS.
Follow these steps as users are prompted to validate unreliable connections to configure UCS device monitoring:
Visit the Orion Web Console as an administrator.
Enter in the address field of the web browser:
http: // (your hostname) / Orion / Admin / Advanced Setup / Global.SPX: Global Tab
When the Advanced Configuration page opens, uncheck the Ignore Certificate Errors check box for UCS settings.
Use Orion Service Manager to restart the following services:
