What 3 words

Good evening,

I'm thinking about trying to use some kind of GPS coordinates for each device and I'm wondering if anyone has had any success with what 3 words app?

Only way I can think of doing this is manually entering the information into a custom field and of course asking network team to enter SNMP location into SNMP devices.

I am interested in the use case you may have, as Long/Lat co-ordinates are more accurate than W3W.

There is an easy API for converting Long/Lat to a W3W address, which you can then store in a Custom Property field and then use for dynamic link to the W3W website. https://developer.what3words.com/public-api/docs

Creating an NCM update is then straightforward to update the SNMP Location value with the W3W value, if this is appropriate

It does not appear anyone has done an overlay of W3W on OpenStreetMap, the Worldwide map mapping function in Orion with he OpenStreetMap Wiki indicating a warning not to from a license perspective, but no doubt it can be done - wiki.openstreetmap.org/.../What3words

Without W3W you can import lat/long values in a custom properties import

Export device list -> Excel together some addresses/postcodes from somewhere -> Postcodeconverter.com -> add lat column and long column -> settings -. custom properties -> import -> set lat and long to update worldmap(lat) and worldmap(long)

This'll plot stuff on the WorldMap as default

As a UK person who had a similar estate I can confirm the use case works

SLW will take a swing at lat/long values based on the address format in the SNMP Location field (or the AD/WMI equivalent). It can go very wrong based on formatting. It may be worth looking into/testing good formats if you've got a good way of getting those data sorted.

If you want to do the actual W3W thing I'd imagine you'd store the W3W value in a custom property, and use a customHTML widget on a classic dashboard with a JSON call to solarwinds to pull data and a JSON call to W3W to plot it. Orion SDK/SWQL stufio for the call query, might need to run it through a URL encoder.

Recommend starting with excel then going policy or code depending where you've got skills or leverage

My wife uses W3W when she's out on her Duke of Edinburgh Award vetting with the Girl Guides. It's really useful for most applications. Besides, it's a few meters squared, per square, that's pretty accurate for most things. So long as you can find the building, you can find the server cabinets, right?

Custom field or SNMP location data sounds like the way forward. I know a great JSON person. I feared this wouldn't be simple as the request "lets get w3w to do it"...

Great for quick communications instead of reeling off long / lat numbers, especially when you need to find a comms cabinet in a car park... they don't even have buildings.

if this is for plotting on a map, then I would go with the Long/Lat values into the default Custom Properties (they are not actually custom properties, but you manage them in the same way) area.

This can readily be automated, with function that goes off to online Long/Lat API lookup services to convert addresses and populate these values.

If you absolutely want to map the W3W values, then this is going to be more involved, hence asking for use case to determine the value.
