upgrade Orion Platform 2018.4 HF3, NPM 12.4, NTA 4.5.0, SAM 6.8.0 to 2020.0.5 failed

Question

Our SolarWinds Environment is hosted in AWS (EC2 and RDS)

We tried to upgrade Orion Platform 2018.4 HF3, NPM 12.4, NTA 4.5.0, SAM 6.8.0 to 2020.2.5. During the upgrade, it fails and throws an error Failed to connect to DB.

The two users we have in SQL are db_owner to the NPM and NTA DB.

We created a ticket with SW last week but no luck.

We did upgrade the Orion Platform 2018.4 HF3 SP3 last month and had no problems.

Does anybody have a Solarwinds environment in EC2 and RDS and experienced problems during the upgrade.

Thanks for your response. We have and 2 users in SQL as per the attachment.

1) OrionDBuser (DB_owner) to its DB

2) NTADBuser (DB Owner) to its DB

3) SA Equivalent with sysadmin access to all DB including master and temp.

We  tried the install with DB connection for each DB and with SA equivalent ID but still got the connection to DB failed error We tried with SA equivalent still same error.

We are able to connect to the DB and run query using the SA equivalent DB.

As our DB is hosted in AWS RDS we are unable to grant sysadmin to Orion and NTA user to the respective DB.

Any pointers will be appreciated. We have engaged SW partners and SW support but no luck yet.

@rkrish01, I would highly recommend that the you connect to the DB’s initially with an account that has SA privileges just to rule something like that out. You should only need it for the screen of the config wiz where you define the DB connection information for each DB. I’ve found that for upgrades of this degree this often resolves a lot of failures especially considering all the changes SW is trying to make to the DB’s. This change is only temporary, the next time you use the config wiz it’ll default to the user you defined for the app to connect.
