Installing NPM , NTA and NCM on same server?

Hi all ,

i need to install these 3 products :

SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor SL100

SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer Module for SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor SL100

SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager DL200

my understanding is that NPM can be installed with NTA on the same server but with different databases

and , NPM and NCM should be installed on the same server using the same database

is that understanding right ?

if right , what about the hardware requiements of the combined npm-nta server , or the npm-ncm server

also can i install npm ncm nta all on the same server , and sum the requirements of each one

You are correct and we have the same setup with more on the same server.

but i have yet to find documentation on when you have multiple products on the same box. Even though that’s what they tell you to do. I didnt install ours but have taken over and improved hopefully

all documentation tell u about the spec of the individual box that software is on, not when they are all on the same box

I have NPM, NCM and NTA installed in the same server. MS SQL has only DB in this case.

They were working on a document that contained exampled of peoples specs and the performance that they experienced. I just have yet to see a final draft so it may have been killed off. You should have a separate box for your NTA DB not the fronted but the database itself.

I have several instances with NPM250, NCM and NTA on the same server. I run the sql on a different server and one additional server runs the NTA database.

2 of these setups also house SAM and SRM on the primary NPM server with absolutely no strain. The NPM server has 4 cores and 16GB of RAM.

in cases where you are doing a small enough deployment that you don't want to stand up a separate SQL server I would suggest you at least split the db drives off. Something like a drive for Windows system stuff, one for the Orion and SQL applications, one for SQL DB, one for NTA DB. Something like 4 vcpu and 16 gb of ram is the bare minimum I would give a system running these, and if you have it to spare and don't want the UI to feel too sluggish I would probably push that closer to 30. Make sure to set up a SQL memory limit that leaves room for your other stuff. Figure something like 4 gb for OS type functions, 4-8 gb for orion stuff, 4-8 gb for NTA db and another 8+ for SQL would give you enough room to keep most of the db data available in RAM. If you are under 16 gb you will likely end up with a laggy UI eventually (keeping in mind that things will probably feel fast for a few months but then slow down as you start to accumulate more historical data and grow the databases).

I have that on a VM.

A lot of resources though it runs like a dog. That's not because of soalrwinds (I don't think) I think it's because of the ageing and not very good kit we have (8 years old AMD processors) If I run the same setup at home (intel 6th gen and running on nvme) it's perfectly fine.

So depending on what kit you have and how old it is, the spec on their requirements should be perfectly fine. I think the 1,000 + nodes COULD have something to do with the performance, though I don't it should make that much of a difference. One VM should be more than enough for the environment that we have.

Yes. We run NPM, NCM, SAM, IPAM, UDT, VNQM and WPM all on the same VM primary server (5 additional pollers due to quantity of nodes) and a VM SQL server and a NTA DB server. Its running well and has been for many years.

The integration is great to have all that just a click away and you can get very creative with dashboards...

I run NPM, NCM, SAM, IPAM, UDT, VNQM and one poller on the same server, and have four additional pollers. No problems. The VM instance on which the apps reside has eight CPU's running 2800 Mhz (3000 Mhz is recommended), and 32 GB of RAM.

It keeps our systems montitored and backed up.

I have this morning just requested to get our cpu count increased looks like our system was not specc'ed out correctly and we only have 2 cpu cores

Use Solarwinds recommendation for CPU and memory based on the license count, and keep your elements under 12,000 per poller, and you should do well.

Yeah, we run NPM, NCM, IPAM, UDT, and SAM all on the same box. We have a separate DB server that has just the one database for SolarWinds. We also split the web server off to it's own device to handle all of the web requests.

I highly recommend splitting the poller and DB server at the bare minimum. Give your DB server as much resources as you can.

Yes, NTA currently installs it's own FSB - which is a mySQL DB if I recall correctly. So, of course the MS DB isn't showing it. As noted, the NTA DB should be installed on a separate server when possible. You *could* install it on the same server but it's not advised (resource contention).

We do not run VMs, because blade chassis take so long to boot, and we want to monitor datacenter recovery from major outages.

We have NPM, NCM, NTA, SAM, and VNQM all on the same server, with a separate SQL server. We have SLX licenses for NPM, NCM, NTA and SAM.

We recently moved the NTA DB to a separate server, and found that it had much lower IO and memory requirements than we expected. We may move IIS or polling to the NTA DB server.

Our SQL server has 96GB RAM. Our SQL DB is about 50GB, and we use up almost all of RAM on the SQL server. We still have performance problems there having to do with indexes and fragments. It's always been hard to get good answers on real world DB maintenance best practices in language that both DBAs unfamiliar with Orion and Orion managers understand.

All of our servers have 12 cores/24 threads. We find that RAID 10 is a must on both Orion and SQL to keep disk queues low.

As @bmallon said, definitely put SQL on a separate server. If your NTA is monitoring a lot of interfaces (ours only does about 70), a separate server will help there.

One would think that Orion performance analysis of itself would be built in. As it is, there are SAM templates and AppStack, but they are somewhat old, and don't handle HTTPS web sites with certs well, nor provide good advice or defaults. Too much detail, no analysis. One key problem is that Orion logs are many and varied, and there's no centralized log analysis of Orion itself. Misconfigured monitoring for a Windows server can cause major performance hits if various background jobs crash. All the SSLv1 vs v2 craziness really affects us, too. So we find that when Orion performance is bad, we need to go to SolarWinds logs to find out why based on time stamps. It burns an afternoon.
