Why ESX host showing hardware sensors Critical power supply false positive

Hi All,

we have one ESX host it is a physical server and Model is ProLiant DL380 G7. we have recevied the Hardware sensors Power supply showing critical.
checked with support team physically and server everything is fine. Could you please let me know the How to overcome this issue.

This power supply showing failure in solariwnds. Could you please advise on this one.

I don't think this is an issue with SolarWinds as it discovers all power supply bays which is there on the device. Check the below link:

Go to -> Disable hardware sensors section, search for the first two power hardware sensors (select Power supply 1) and disable them on that node.

Your ProLiant DL380 G7 Hardware could be running as expected but probably it was installed with Redundant Power supply and only one power supply is functional as of now.

actually we have same model hardware. power supply is showing correctly(green) and checked the SNMP walk also everything is fine

if it disabled and enabled the hardware sensors is it working or we will perementaly disabled the power supply hardware sensors for this server .

we login to ilo server it is showing two power supply and status is fine.

SNMP walk tested power supply is showing fine.

I guess you can just disable power supply 1 sensors on that particular node to remove it from monitoring. Yes, you can as well try the option that you mentioned, disable and after few minutes enable the same and check if it helps.

In that case its better to raise a case with solarwinds support, the image that you pasted from SolarWinds SAM does not state the issue is with Power supply bay, rather it says that Power supply on 1 is shutdown & hence 0 W input (that means there is no power coming on that bay - but it doesnt mean there is an issue). But if power is being supplied on both the bays you should raise a case with SolarWinds.

we disabled and enabled the hardware sensors but still showing Critical. No luck. i have to check with another option.

I'd be curious to know what happens if you swap the power supplies between the slots. Curious if the problem follows. I'd also be curious to know what Solarwinds support determines and how you resolve the problem.

if we swap the power supply the slots. it is showing the same thing. we checked the vcenter level showing Normal (Hardware sensors Fine). SNMP walk also showing normal ( no abnormality). all the trouble shooting completed from our end. finally we have to raise the case with vendor. please stay tuned.

So you see the same issue in vCenter for the host? Are you polling vCenter with the vmware polling? If you are then that might explain where your false positive is coming from. Fix the problem in vCenter with the hardware monitoring and it should fix your issue in SW.

I'd be going down this same route too ^ the vcenter integration makes it so orion doesn't collect hardware information from SNMP, only from the vmware CIM data. There have definitely been bugs with vcenter CIM in the past.
