How to monitor the Process instance count for Linux/UNIX servers

Hi All,

we are unable to monitor the process instance count in SAM but we are able to successful monitoring with process.

problem : unable to monitor the process instance count for Linux/Unix servers. Can you please help me on this one

when checking the Process monitor component unable to see the Count. please help me on this one

we tried with number of ways but no luck

I guess that's because of the command my friend, I guess the output also has grep listed in it, try the below and let me know:

Replace the below line

PROCESSCOUNT=`ps -ef | grep -i XYZ | wc -l`

With

PROCESSCOUNT=`ps -ef | grep -i XYZ | grep -v grep | wc -l`

On the script

Try Linux/Unix Script monitor in SAM, you can write your own script to retrieve the output the way you want. Extract it via Message and Stats variables. Look for examples on how to write Linux/Unix script monitor you will find several on thwack and use it to suite your need.

Its been quite some time that I have done this my friend more over I do not have a SAM Instance to test it as well, but never mind let me at least point you in the right direction and others who are actively using SAM can pitch in and correct us:)

1. Create a new Linux/Unix Script component monitor on an example template/application.

2. You will see 'Script working directory' just mention /tmp (its ideally /tmp as it executes on the end device and I dont want to store it elsewhere, but upto you, you can provide any feasible directory that you want.)

3. Command Line: /bin/sh ${SCRIPT}

4. Script body -> Click on EDIT SCRIPT and provide the below commands (you are trying to get a process count of a certain process isnt it, lets say process name is XYZ for example)

#!/bin/sh

PROCESSCOUNT=`ps -ef | grep -i XYZ | wc -l`

echo "Statistic.processcount: $PROCESSCOUNT";

echo "Message.processcount: Process XYZ Instance count $PROCESSCOUNT";

5. Script Output:

Unique ID: processcount

Display Name: processcount

6. If you want to set the threshold that is based on your processcount.

I would have made some rookie mistakes try out the above steps and let me know if it works

We can fine tune the script later on like passing process name as an argument to make it reusable etc...

But for now try it out and let me know if this works.

Thanks Vinay..Script is working and everything is fine

But i have one doubt given the process instance count is 10 available in server but after script execute successfully out put is showing 11

why it is showing output 11 . Can you please let me know
