Migrating to new Server

Question

Currently were running 2019.4.1 HF6 and we're looking at migrating to a new server for Orion but not the DB. We're happy with the process with migrating the Name and address to the new server.

What I would like to know is does the new new server have to be installed with 2019.4.1 HF6 and then upgraded to the latest version or can I install the latest version and then when the config tool is run that process will migrate the DB to the latest installed version?

Any information would be much appreciated.

@m_roberts might be correct, but then i generally go with the standard approach, below is what i did for my projects:

1. Ideally I upgrade the modules before I migrate to a new server.

2. In case for SolarWinds module upgrade if I need a latest version of OS (like say Windows 2019) etc... in that case i would migrate as is onto the new server with the current version of SolarWinds modules and once i am on the new server i then plan to upgrade my SolarWinds modules to the latest version.

If you migrate as part of an upgrade, follow the upgrade path for your upgrades. Depending on the upgrade path and requirements for new product versions, you may need to migrate to new servers and OS before upgrading Orion products.

There is logic in the installation process that checks the version of Orion for the SQL database and will then look to perform the necessary Schema updates. Therefore, you 'should' be able to install the latest version of Orion against this older version schema of your current SQL Server database.

I would suggest that you account for additional time and process however, just in case you hit issues; snapshot your new VM and have good backups of the SQL database, which you can revert to and then install the same version as you have currently on the new server if you do hit any issues.
