Do Agents Communicate with Pollers via IP Address or DNS Name?

Question

We are looking to upgrade our pollers in order to change out the OS. Our company has some agents that are in a very restricted zone and are tied to a single poller. Question is, is that communication done via IP (which we can't re-use currently) or would we be able to put in a CName record for the new server to "Trick" the agents to communicating with the older server name?

96% certain agents use IP to contact Orion, not DNS name. There is a config-file at the client that state the orion server address.
