Reports not showing interfaces without descriptions.

Good morning.

First wanted to state that i am very new to SW so i'm assuming i'm missing something easy here.

I'm trying to create a simple report that will show me all interfaces in my environment that are not disabled (administratively down) and have no current connection. After several different variants to the report i keep getting odd results. I noticed i was only getting ports that had a description on it. So to try and figure out what was going on, i decided i would just run a report on 1 specific switch and look at all of the interfaces to see what it would show me. It again would only show me ports that had descriptions. Whether they were up or down did not matter, but it would skip all interfaces with no description.

For example i am using a Dynamic Query Builder and i have the following variables: I want to report on - Interface. Where - All child conditions must be satisfied (And). Node Name - Stars with: "specific switch".

If i run that it will give me a report that only shows the interfaces with descriptions.

That is of course not the original query i ran. Just the one trying to troubleshoot why i'm only seeing the ones with descriptions.

Any thoughts on this? Like i said i'm sure it's something i'm doing i'm just having trouble finding out what.

Sounds like you may need to add another condition and add something similar to interface description is null

I don't really understand why that would be needed.... Regardless i gave that a try as well and it came back with nothing. I had set the interface description as empty.

Since i'm doing this with the dynamic query builder i know i'm a bit more limited. I just honestly don't know enough about SQL to do much. It's something i'll have to start working toward.

The attached JPG files shows an example using an alert I have. In this case it is using a custom property field to set the alerts severity to match a 2 or a 3. If the field is blank, there is no match, so the alert won't trigger I added Is Empty to match a blank field. You might possibly have a similar situation in your report. Could you attach a screen shot of your logic?

Thanks for the replies. I was actually able to figure out the issue (and of course it was my lack of knowledge)

The fact that the report only had ports with descriptions was a red herring. Due to license restraints, the technician before me only turned on monitoring on ports that he knew were in use (and thus SHOULD have had a description). So even though i knew for a fact we had some ports that were admin up but op down, those were not set to monitor and would not appear in the report.

Something simple but it was driving me nuts.

Now i need to figure out a new strategy to to get that info.
