SWQL Studio Versions

Quick query... I hope.

Is the version of SWQL Studio specific to versions of NPM, NCM, etc...?

I ask as we have taken on an older install of Solarwinds (NPM v12.0) and SWQL Studio (v2.0.50.0) and note that a lot of what I see in our setup is differemt from theirs. Some of it is becasue our environment is different, etc, but I would have expected the table names to at least be similar.

I don't know how much change has occurred in the evolution of the database over the years. I know there have been schema changes, and I have been told that Config Wizard was supposed to "pave the road" and fix things. However, our current database has been upgraded for several years without being rebuilt. I have run into incidents where support has run a query and it has not worked, and after examination found that a table in what might be a standard modern query isn't referring to the correct table or table name in our database. I think browsing the table should still work to see what is there and crafting a query based on that should work, but there are some odd differences in our database compared to a fresh database. For this reason and others, we are rebuilding everything from scratch to get to the latest version and hopefully resolve some odd database behavior.

What you see is based on what you have installed and what api you connect to, the screen shot below is the dialog's to my sign in to SWQL studio. v2 and v3 will have some differences between them even on the same install, but mostly its all the same. Typically the SDK installs are very quick an painless, so don't be afraid to install the new SDK even if your Orion is a bit older, as you can see, if needed you can select older Api versions if needed.

John you are right that the SQL schema changes, likely every upgrade.

The SWQL should not change between upgrades if you continue using the the same version (today likely v2 or v3). You might get new things (columns, views, etc) added, but that shouldn't break queries since SWQL won't let you do wildcards in queries. I have never had an issue in SWQL with removals after an upgrade.

I can't recall if the failed queries support ran were in SWQL SDK or the SolarWinds database manager. They could have been SQL queries. All I know for sure is I had a surprised support tech when a query failed for not finding a "standard" table. We found it labeled similar but different, like the name was a carry over.
