A co-worker shared this link with me, and it's a bit of an eye-opener to realize improvements in hardware design and construction in the last few years would allow any software to run 10X, or 100X, or maybe even 1000X faster, if software writers/designers were aware of how much better today's hardware is than yesterday's.
By becoming aware of how software writing philosophies can, and should, change to leverage improved hardware environment, software writers could reduce the Total Cost Of Ownership (or rental) of data centers and their resources by 10X, or 100X, or maybe even 1000X.
If you design / write code, especially on a large scale basis like Solarwinds' suites, this is worth a read.
Or if you're a network admin, or a systems admin, or a DBA, or a SAN master, this could change your way of thinking and end up speeding up operations for users.
