Must I use SNMP RW?
shortwaver
I am only able to add nodes via NPM when the target machine's community string is set to Read Write. If I try to use Read nly, I get an error saying the target "does not respond to SNMP queries.." Two reasons I would like to use the Read Only is that I believe it is more secure and Microsoft Group Policies do not enable you to set a communinty string to Read Write. I can push, and change if I need to, many community strings in a few minutes with GP's. It would be a huge time saver to be able to connect to nodes with the SNMP RO community.
Am I missing something?
Thanks

Hi shortwaver,
Welcome to the forum.
Some questions:
1. Do you have similar issues adding network devices (routers, switches, etc...) with a RO community string?
2. Do you have Accept SNMP packets from these hosts selected on the SNMP security tab?
You should not have a problem adding machines with a RO community string. All of our routers, switches, and Windows servers have a RO string with no RW string. I have never had a problem adding any of these devices.
Be fantastic.

Isaac, we do have the correct settings to accept snmp packets from those hosts. Basically what I have set up is a server that I want to monitor. On that server I have the snmp service set for the correct community string with RW permissions. I also have set up the correct management station that I want to be able to pull this information from. It works correctly in this configuration. If I change the configuration to only allow RO, I can no longer connect to the monitored server using snmp.
It's good to see that it works for you. That leads me to think something is wrong on my side.
I am using Server 2003 (not sp1) on both devices and I'm not sure if that could be an issue.
Thanks for your help!

Shortwaver,
Orion NPM supports RO or RW community strings (if fact, we suggest customers use the RO community strings, not the RW).
I'm not sure what is the problem on the 2003 server. I have a 2003 server configured sitting next to me with a SNMP Read-Only community string only (no RW srtring configured) and it works fine.
Isaac
shortwaver,
Do you have issues with network devices?
If you can add routers/switches/etc... with a RO community you will eliminate the Orion server as the cause of the issue. Then you can focus your attention on the host you are attempting to monitor.
Be fantastic.
