Need to monitor interfaces only for bandwidth utilization

We use Cisco 4510 chasis as user aggregation switches in the wiring closets. Currently we are monitoring only the trunks connecting to the distribution switches because when we added all the user ports, we were getting alerted when the user ports were going up/down.

Is there a way to monitor the port only for the receive/transmit bandwith utilization and not the link state? I dont want to monitor the link state of the port or have the switch go in problem state with any of the user ports go down but at the same time I would like to monitor the bandwidth on these ports so that we can track the user in the event of network congestion.

My apologies if this has been hashed before, I searched the archive but could not find any relevant information.

This has been a common topic on the forums.

As of this time, there are no 'monitor only' options for interfaces or nodes. I have the same problem =( I just want to watch bandwidth and errors on server-facing ports, but I don't really care if they're up or down.

Hi,

A work around for this could be to create two Universal Device Pollers on the following OIDs and assign them to the interfaces on which only the bandwidth has to be monitored:

ifInOctets: 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.10

ifOutOctets: 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.16

Description: The total number of Octets Received/Transmitted on the interface, including framing characters.

Yann, wouldn't the interfaces have to exist [monitored] in order to assign universal device pollers to it? That will continue to cause up/down interface status.

If you specify at the end of the OID, the index of the interface, e.g.:

1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.10.1

and select the following properties in the Show Advanced Options section for your UnDP:

MIB Value Type: counter

SNMP Get Type: Get

Polling Type: Node

It should return you values without the need to monitor the interface status through the classic path.
