Checking freshness of data

Is there any built-in way to check for the freshness of performance data. For example, we just now noticed that one machine has not been collecting performance data for serveral weeks. The machine was reachable during that time, but we cannot figure out why is started reporting again. Obviously figuring out why it stopped (or is stopping) is a key issue, but we would like a method of figuring out if the collected data is too old.
Any help is appreciated.
