Don't the World Wide Maps icons change color to reflect the node (or group) status? Or am I just missing something easy and fundamental?

Add the world wide map resource to a view and you should see the correct status.
neomatrix1217 is correct. The blue color indicates you are directly in the world map editor.
You can add the world map to any Orion page. Just add a new widget and select the worldmap ressource. Than you have green / yellow / red color indicators.
