Deploying an agent/node to an external client workstation

Hello,

Would anyone be able to tell me how to deploy an agent to an external client workstation? I downloaded the agent software to install on the client workstation but I don't understand how the external client workstation would communicate with our solarwinds server. Would a VPN connection have to be setup?
