Delete vs. Unmanage a Decommissioned Node; Impact on Availability Reporting

What are the recommended best practices for decommissioning a node, application, or component? I'm assuming all of the node's data will be deleted when the node is deleted, so I was considering Unmanaging the node first for "X" months. Since we're running reports for up-to a 3 month timeframe, I was planning on deleting the nodes after that time period. Is this the correct process so that the reports are accurate?

This would be pretty dependant upon the environment. If you would need to be able to report on data for an extended period of time, then unmanage is the way to go. Procedurally, it may be advisable to create a CP for "Delete-By" and report on / remove it.
