Configuring Linux NPM Monitioring???

Can someone explain to me how you configure a Linux server to point to your solar winds NPM machine.

I installed snmp through yum but am pretty much stuck from that point.

i found the /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf file but aren't sure what i need to put in this file to make it point to my solar winds server or what lines for that matter.

could someone provide some instructions as to how this works.

With windows Machines it so easy with WMI but Linux has to use SNMP.

The very least you have to do is add a line to your snmpd.conf to include a community string:

rocommunity mystring

You can limit it to a specific box, by adding an IP at the end:

rocommunity mystring 10.1.1.1

You can change the location and contact by adding these items:

syslocation 123 Fake St. Hometown, USA

syscontact dontcallme@hometown.usa

There is much much more you can change, so I'd recommend checking out the man page or reading some of the additional details online.

Edit:  Don't forget to restart snmp after you make changes to the file
